Happy Birthday, Grandpa!

Mike and I were able to go for a six-day trip so we could be with his dad for his 80th birthday. We had a relaxing time and enjoyed some beautiful fall weather. This first photo is of Grandpa enjoying the view from their new apartment.

Almost every day we took some walks and some great photos, too. We went on a few outings with Mom and Dad, too, so if you’re planning a trip to Erie, Pennsylvania, we’ve got some ideas for you.

Things to do in Erie, Pennsylvania, and vicinity

Karen’s and Cal’s Sites

My sister just told me she has a website for the family home in Decorah, Iowa, so if you know the Larson or Helgeson side of the clan, you might want to check out her new website, sommerhuset (summer house in Norwegian), with her blog about Decorah and places with some family historical interest.

Cal has a business website for his jewelry store, too. Click on his “showcase” if you enjoy looking at pretty jewelry.

Nephew Becomes Youth Pastor

We are proud to announce that our nephew, Aaron, has accepted the call to be the youth pastor at Colgate Baptist Church. Aaron, and his wife, Theresa, also have jobs so theirs will be a bivocational ministry.

Aaron wrote: “I am super excited about our new youth group and leading them straight to the cross. We can’t wait to get started ministering and discipling these kids and helping to grow the kingdom of God. We are just blessed to be serving by the mercy of God and are so excited to be doing what we love and where our hearts are. To God be all the Glory. We definitely covet your prayers.”

Our Last High School Graduation

P5290096 fix2

We had a great time celebrating Jenny’s graduation. Last weekend, we had a party with Ben and Josh, her grandparents and her Aunt Nancy and Uncle Pat. On this weekend, we had a party with her friends. You can see more photos in our family online photo album.

Jenny was on the stage because she was in the top twenty of her graduating class of over 700 students.

Jenny’s high school had an early morning graduation in the Amway Arena downtown. You can see the Magic poster behind us.

A Family Wedding in New Orleans

P5160197

We enjoyed a road trip to New Orleans to attend our nephew’s wedding. Many of the Schmitt clan were there so we added two days to be together. We rode a streetcar into New Orleans for one day and visited a plantation on another day. I will put more details on other posts from May 16 through 19.

Also check our online photo album from May 1 to 19, 2009.

A Surprise Birthday Party for Grandma

Mike, Sus, and Jenny drove down to Naples where Mike’s sister, Nancy, lives. Twelve members of the Schmitt clan managed to surprise Grandma for an early birthday party.

Many of you know our extended family, so we are including a picture of Grandma and Grandpa with their three great-grandsons, Peyton, Caulder, and Noah. We ordered more photos of the birthday party through the internet, so you can look at the party album, too, if you wish.

Cruisin’ at 30

We just had a GREAT weekend!

First, Ben and Josh came to celebrate Josh’s twentieth birthday, so we had a fun party and lots of good food.

Also, we spent a day with Sus’ sister, Karen, and her husband, Cal, and had more good food!

Cal and Karen went on a cruise to celebrate their thirtieth wedding anniversary and spent some time with us before and after the trip. We had not been together for six years and we thoroughly enjoyed their visit.

We are also celebrating because Karen is a cancer survivor! Thanks to all of you who prayed for her chemotherapy.

A Family Wedding

Jenny and Sus enjoyed a beautiful day in Daytona for Cousin Erin’s wedding. You can see some of our extended family at the wedding in an album at our Family Album site.

Be sure to visit the other albums, too!

Erik visits from California

We enjoyed a visit one night with our nephew, Erik, who was on a business trip to our area for a few days.

Mike, Josh, and Jenny took Erik to Downtown Disney Pleasure Island. (Ben and Sus were out-of-town). They enjoyed stopping at a new Harley-Davidson store which has custom Harley-Davidson motorcycles with unique paint schemes on display to see and to sit on. You can see both Mike and Erik on the Harleys at our Family Album site.

Sus visits Ohio

For more photos from the trip, go to our Picasa Family Albums. The following narrative explains the photos in the Ohio trip album. I write about the ministry aspect of the trip in our ministry blog and describe on this site some of my side trips I took when I had free time. I visited a lot of friends and places.

One of the big news items in May was the massive forest fire in Georgia. The pilot pointed it out to us as I flew to Cleveland.

The next day I drove to Cincinnati. My friends drove me over to Kentucky to have a leisurely lunch on the Ohio River on a replica of a paddle wheel steamboat.

As I headed back to Cleveland, I stopped in Coshocton for an hour to walk around a restored canal town, Old Roscoe Village. I highly recommend the trip north to Wooster on scenic route 83. I crossed the Ohio-Erie canal, a canal boat docked on the side. Flocks of sheep trailed back to their barns as the road wound its way through lush farmland.

I had a day off in Wooster, so a friend and I drove to Mansfield to see Kingwood Center. The mansion and gardens are free. Most of the tulips were still in bloom.

I stayed several nights in Chardon with a couple who run an alpaca farm. The adults looked funny because they had just been sheared. Two babies were born while I was there.

I had more time to spend in Lakewood than I thought I would have. The city is upgrading all its schools, which was good to see, but I also saw that some places looked just a bit run down. I saw our old homes, church, and schools. I took a little time in the Valley, had a sundae at Malley’s, and shopped at Geiger’s. I visited twice at the cemetery where my parents are buried and was able to put fresh flowers on their graves one very cold and drizzly afternoon.

Both Amherst and Olmsted Township had some older structures that were fun to photograph.

Westlake has changed considerably with huge McMansions and a new residential and shopping area called Crocker Park. I especially enjoyed Trader Joe’s health food grocery store and hope they will open a store near us some day.

When we were little, we went fairly often to Mentor Headlands for swimming in the summer, so I had a chance to drop in for a short look around. I was on my way to Geneva State Park Lodge to meet Grandma and Grandpa for her birthday dinner. The beautiful, new lodge has a dining room looking out over the lake and the food was high quality and very tasty, too. We had hoped to walk around and enjoy the pretty setting, but the wind was quite icy, so we sat by the fireplace in the lobby and talked on my cell phone with the family back home.

I had a free day on my last day in Ohio. Our family had visited Holden Arboretum several times when we were growing up. It is still a very lovely place to spend the afternoon. I also dropped in on Penitentiary Glen county park and was very impressed. I thoroughly enjoyed driving around Lake county and the surrounding area.
